On Wednesday 20 April we held a Woodland Birthday Party, to celebrate 10 years since the Banovallu
m Carr Wood was planted, sponsored by The Woodland Trust and organised by Transition Horncastle and held at Banovallum Carr. About 50 people attended including 30 local children and the party featured a large tipi which was painted by the children, an Easter Egg Hunt, a Nature Trail, music and dancing with a Native American Indian theme and a delicious birthday cake. The sun shone all day and everyone enjoyed a wonderful day in the woods. Many thanks to The Woodland Trust for helping this happen.
Banovallum Carr (from Banovallum, the Roman name for Horncastle, and Carr, the local Norse word for wet woodland) was planted by local people in 2001 and 2007.

Full of native species, typical of Lincolnshire wet woodland, like willow, alder, ash and birch, with native shrubs such as sallow, purging buckthorn and alder buckthorn, the wood forms a valuable habitat among the surrounding grassland, wetland and river communities. Look out for dragon and damselflies, as well as kingfishers on the Old River Bain and barn owls on the hunt.
The first 11 acres was purchased by the Woodland Trust in 2000 as part of their nationwide “Woods on your Doorstep” project, supported by the Millennium and Forestry Commissions, as well as the Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts and landfill tax credits contributed by Lincwaste and distributed via WREN.
The second 10 acres were purchased in 2007 with financial assistance from WREN and SITA through the Landfill Communities Fund, the Forestry Commission and the George Jobson Trust, and planted with the valued assistance of the Horncastle Rotary Club.
